Dry Needling.
What is dry needling?
A treatment option for patients who suffer from musculoskeletal pain. Dry needling utilizes thin, stainless steel needles (same needles used for acupuncture) to insert into muscles, ligaments, fascia and similar soft tissues to treat trigger points or sore spots in the soft tissues. The body responds to the insertion of the needles by producing a local inflammatory response and signaling the body to start a process of repair.
Dry needling can be done as a stand alone treatment but studies show dry needling works best when combined with chiropractic treatment or specific soft tissue work.
What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
First difference is the intent of the practitioner. Chiropractors use dry needling to improve or eliminate pain and muscle tension. Acupuncturists' focus on energy. The second difference is the amount of time. Acupuncture can take 45-60 minutes where dry needling can be done in less than 15 mins.
Does it hurt?
Everyone has different sensitivity levels but generally speaking no it does not hurt. The insertion of the needle is not like an injection. The needle is very thin and many times, you don't even know the needle is being inserted or removed. The insertion of the needle can cause a twitch response in the muscle and this can create some soreness in that area for a day or so, similar to if you just worked out.
